「薩滿」saman來自滿語及其他通古斯語族語言。在通古斯語中是「智者」、「曉徹」的意思,且意指有能力進入入神狀態,並能與神溝通之人。
薩滿信仰中的薩滿被認為是掌握神秘知識,有能力進入「人神」狀態的人,有著預言、治療,與屬靈世界溝通,以及旅行到屬靈世界的能力。薩滿會作為一個巫醫、術士、驅魔師、占卜師、亡靈巫師或靈魂行者。在中國西南地區,各個民族都有不同的薩滿,他們是神靈世界的守護著,也是現實世界中最後的通靈人。

雙針繡
貴州黔東南州雷山地區的獨特刺繡。繡時需要上下兩根針交替工作。先將一根絲線一分為二,一粗一細,粗線做面線,在繡面上盤繞,另一根細線穿針後用回針針法將粗線盤繞的面線固定在布上。如此反復運針形成圖案。此繡法需要紙樣,一環扣一環,沿圖案外圍輪廓按一定走向繡向圖案中心,有較強的走向感。

堆繡
貴州台江縣革一地區的獨特刺繡,是一種複雜、耗時費工的工藝。它最大的特點是,刺繡的材料不是絲線,而是絲綢。用皂角浸泡過的絲綢疊成一個個小三角,由內而外堆疊構成。這種刺繡圖案具有較強的立體感。傳統的圖案多為八角花。近代也出現了蝴蝶、鳳鳥、魚的圖案。

打籽繡

這是少數民族地區應用最廣的一種繡法。數紗繡具有幾何形式和對稱感。繡布需要經緯線非常明顯的手織土布,以經緯線為坐標,計算橫向、縱向或者斜向的紗數,規則運針。這種繡法從繡布反面運針,有“反面繡,正面看”的說法。此繡品為雲南文山地區的彝族祭祀服,繡線為羊毛線,植物染色。是刺繡中的精品。

貼布繡
先將要繡製的花樣做成剪紙,貼在繡布上,再將彩布略放大一些尺寸後剪成同樣圖案,將彩布覆蓋在剪紙上,捲邊,用線沿輪廓固定,不能露邊,針腳越細越好。

數紗繡
這是一種極為古老的技法,做法是將蠶放在一塊平木板上,讓蠶在上面均勻的吐絲,到一定厚度時揭下蠶絲,將其壓平,成為板絲。每年只有一個季節可以製作。板絲繡品,古樸神秘,有一種歲月的滄桑感。

打籽繡

十字繡
十字繡是全世界流行度最廣的一種刺繡工藝。在布的經緯上繡成大小均勻的十字,再由一個個小十字佈局組成圖案。一般從圖案的中心開始起針,向四周延續。它講究圖案的對稱整齊,佈局巧妙。繡娘要先對整個圖案進行構思以後再開始繡製,不需要紙樣,很有創作挑戰,所以幾乎沒有相同的花樣。這種繡法也是從反面繡、正面看。貴陽花溪的十字繡非常精美絕倫。

打籽繡
打籽繡是將絲線一分為二,針從繡底向繡面刺上來後,用針在線上繞兩圈後再刺下去,形成打結的樣子,針針如此,每針一個圓籽。它的特點是質感強,經久耐磨。這是一張至少二百年歷史的 布依族打籽繡背帶繡片。鮮豔的色彩已經退去,風華卻依舊存在。
