Most of the ethnic groups in southwest China believe that we humans are an integral part of the cosmos, a view of the universe that can be traced back to the ancient Chinese civilization thousands years ago. They believe in the existence of divinities and express their faith through wearing their traditional garments in the modern society. The Yi ethnic groups embroidered on their clothes the original patterns of the mystical he-tu and luo-shu diagrams, holograms of the structure of the universe which are believed to be bestowed by God and handed down from before this civilization around 5500 years ago. The Miao ethnic groups dressed up in clothes embroidered with deities and divinities when they were in ceremonies worshiping the heavens and the gods, maintaining harmony between Man and Nature.

weaving
Textile is made up of two parts: "spinning" and "weaving". In fact, from a single fibre to a piece of fabric, there are dozens of processes in between, which is no easy task at all. The ancient Chinese were wise enough to use martial arts and books to train boys, and women's colours and textiles to train girls. This is really a process of cultivating the heart.

Weaving? Performer? Programming?
My weaving teacher, Hilde, warned me from the start:
If you want to make complicated patterns, you have to be good at maths.
Later I learnt the meaning of this statement: behind the knitting is a bunch of numerical procedures. Every shuttle is a dance between the fingertips and a bunch of numerical codes. In order to make sure that each shuttle does not go wrong, I have to stay awake long enough to take a few deep breaths, move the card reader, find the corresponding pedal, step on it, shuttle the threads, and then move the card reader again, look at the next set of numbers, and find another pedal. ......

Hand-Woven Jacket: Harappa
Material: Organic Katiya Ghicha silk yarn.
Organic Charka cotton, linen, silver buttons.
These silk yarns come from the forests of India and are wildly cocooned, not manually stripped, so that means they are harvested in a peaceful way. The threads are hand-spun by women in southern India. These traditional materials woven together remind me of the Harappans of long ago.
